Private / Worker’s Compensation, Department of Veterans Affairs

Our occupational therapists also see private clients, people recovering from a workplace injury under Workers Compensation, and veterans and their families through the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA). Whichever applies to you, you'll receive the same thorough assessment and practical recommendations built around your goals. If you're not sure what you're covered for or whether you need a referral, call us on 02 4946 4946 and we'll help you work it out.

Aged Care OT

As life changes, the things that matter most usually stay the same: your home, your routines, and doing things your own way. Our aged care occupational therapists help you keep hold of them, safely and comfortably.

We come to you, whether that's your own home, supported accommodation or a residential care facility. Your therapist takes the time to get to know you, listens to what is and isn't working, and builds every recommendation around your goals.

Changes in mobility, memory, confidence or energy can make everyday tasks feel harder than they used to. Our Newcastle and Hunter team works alongside you and your family to find practical ways through, so you can keep doing the things that give your day shape and meaning.

Mental Health Occupational Therapy

A mental health condition can make everyday life harder, from keeping up with routines to staying connected with the people and activities you care about. Our occupational therapists work with you in a practical, goal-focused way, starting from your strengths and what you want to achieve. Together we build life skills and routines, set up your environment so it works for you, and find strategies for managing emotions and coping on difficult days.

An assessment may help if your mental health is getting in the way of daily tasks, social connection or personal goals. It can also provide evidence for NDIS access or a plan review, so the support you receive matches what you need.

During your assessment, your therapist looks at how you are managing everyday tasks such as cooking, cleaning, personal care and household routines, and how connected you feel to family, friends and your community. We review your home for changes that could support your wellbeing, and explore which coping strategies suit you best. We also look at the thinking skills that keep daily life on track, including planning, organisation, memory, decision-making and focus. From there we set goals together, whether for study, work, social life or personal growth, and make sure every step is realistic and reflects your priorities.

HB Rehab's OT’s work with you in your home, community, or workplace to understand your unique needs and provide practical, personalised solutions. We support people of all ages and abilities, including NDIS participants, with a wide range of occupational therapy services.

Functional Assessment (OT)

A functional assessment shows how your disability or health condition affects everyday life and what support would make a real difference. Your occupational therapist looks at what you can do, where you need a hand, and how physical, cognitive or mental health changes are affecting you at home and in the community. We work with your family, carers, support staff and other health professionals to build a complete picture, then provide clear, practical recommendations you can use as evidence for NDIS access, plan reviews, a change in circumstances, or housing and living supports such as SIL, SDA and ILO.

Your assessment happens in the places that matter to you, whether that's home, work or out in the community. Your therapist watches how everyday tasks go in real life and uses standardised assessment tools to measure your abilities and support needs. You then receive a thorough, easy-to-read report that sets out your strengths, the support you need, and practical steps for building your skills and independence.

The benefits reach well beyond the report. An assessment can uncover simple ways to make you safer and more mobile, point you towards equipment or services that take the effort out of daily tasks, and highlight skills you can build in routines like cooking, cleaning and personal care. It also gives you the evidence to seek funding and support that improve your independence and quality of life.

Home and Living Assessments

A home and living assessment helps people with complex housing or support needs find a way of living that is safe, comfortable and as independent as possible. Your occupational therapist looks at how you manage daily tasks in your home, then recommends the modifications, equipment or supports that would make everyday life easier.

We also provide the evidence needed for NDIS housing and living supports. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is purpose-designed housing for people with very high support needs, with accessible features that make independence and in-home care easier. Supported Independent Living (SIL) is the day-to-day support that helps you live in your home, whether you share or live on your own. The two can work together, and a clear assessment can strengthen your application and guide decisions about which option suits you best.

Home Modification Assessments

A home modification assessment finds the things in your home that are getting in your way and recommends changes to help you move around and live more safely. We work with people of all ages, including older people and people with disability, and every recommendation is shaped around your goals and the way you use your home.

Some changes are small, such as adding grab rails, and can make a big difference to how safely and comfortably you get around. Others are more complex, such as redesigning a bathroom or installing a lift, and are planned with your independence, daily routines and future needs in mind. We guide you from the first assessment through to installation, and support you with funding applications, including NDIS home modifications.

Assistive Technology Assessments

Assistive technology is any device or piece of equipment that makes everyday tasks easier, safer or more enjoyable. It ranges from simple, low-cost items such as adapted cutlery, shower chairs and falls alarms, through to more complex equipment such as manual and power wheelchairs, electric beds and lifting aids. The right choice depends on you, your routines and the places you spend your time.

Your occupational therapist visits you at home, at work or in the community to see the tasks you want help with, check the layout and any safety risks, and look at portable options for when you are out and about. Wherever possible we arrange trials, so you can test equipment in the spaces where you will use it and we can make adjustments before anything is ordered. We then guide you through the funding and approval process, so the equipment you end up with works well now and as your needs change.
